End of Season Presidents Message

Fellow Captains – another season has come and gone with only a couple of matches affected by the weather. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that represented Somerset this year and particularly to those of you that I partnered.

Captain of Captains Mike led the team with great success as we won the Four Counties at Kingsdown in Wiltshire, taking the trophy off Dorset who just pipped us for the Six Counties earlier in the season at Stover.   Well done to you Mike and thank you from us all for this year – looking at the match results it was a good year for the Somerset Captains under your leadership.

As you all know it takes time and effort to put on these matches and to all of this year’s match managers new and old, well done from me for making each fixture work like clockwork. The Spring Meeting, Captains Invitation and Autumn Meeting also take a lot of work to put on with Rob Fear our Fixture Secretary finding a host club and Clive Stilwell our Secretary giving up his day manning the check-in desk and sorting out the scores a big thank you both.  Also thank you to Ian Gover for standing in for the delayed Spring Meeting when Clive was away.

The Executive Committee has been hard at work this year looking after your interests keeping our golfing costs as low as possible.  As you all know things are not getting any cheaper but hopefully costs next year are expected to stay the same – please check on the website for any information as and when changes may occur.  My thanks to all the Committee members on your hard work this year.

To all this year’s Meeting winners, well done and to those like me who just missed out our time will come next year – it might be you picking up the glassware.

A special mention to one member who at this year’s Inter County event at St Mellion helped a fellow Captain from Derbyshire, Colin Barnard, who had a fall on the course.  So Glyn Sewell, well done from us all for your generosity on the course that day in helping a fellow golfer in distress – you are a credit to Cannington and the Somerset Golf Captains.

With the season now complete, please watch on the web site for our annual dinner announcements.  We have moved venue to The Holiday Inn Taunton and the diner is to be held on Friday March 7th.  There are still some hotel rooms available, and I hope to see as many of you there as possible. Let’s make it a great evening.

Another date for your diary is next year’s Spring Meeting and AGM to be held at Minehead & West Somerset Golf Cub on Tuesday 8th April and again it’s your chance to have a say and hear about what Is happening within Somerset Captains and to elect and meet your new Captain and President.  Please attend if possible, even if your can not play golf on the day.

Thank you all again, we have had a great year, and I hope to see you all next year at some point.

Have a very happy Christmas and New Year.
